I didn’t have a clear vision of how I wanted to see him react. Overall I was content with what they showed us. I liked that you could definitely see how much faith he has in Carol. He wanted to have a say in making the decision what would happen to Carol and he absolutely wanted to have a chance to hear Carol tell him herself what happened. You could also tell that the rage from former seasons is still there lingering under the surface. But it’s not blind and reckless anymore he doesn’t let it consume him.
I thought it was interesting that you said in your season 4 wish list that Daryl and Rick have a moment of friendship this season. We know Daryl sees Rick as "family", but how do you think Rick sees Daryl?
Nice ask! :D
While I do feel that Rick does appreciate Daryl and does think of all the group as family, I think that he maybe doesn’t realise the extent to which Daryl looks up to him.
I think for Daryl, Rick can almost do no wrong. He trusts Rick so much that he will go against his own instincts and sense of what is right and wrong to follow him. I feel that someone in Rick’s position in the world before, a police office and a good family man, for him to look to Daryl and appreciate and like him means such a lot to Daryl.
As I said, I don’t think Rick fully realises how high he ranks in Daryl’s opinion. I think he see’s Daryl as a friend and someone he can count on and who will always have his back.
All of that being said, we have seen a few moments throughout Season 3 where Daryl and Rick had been there for one another- having each other’s back in a bad situation and it’s been nice but we’ve very rarely had them talk like friends. They’ve progressed to where they seem to only talk about missions and runs and even when they talk to one another more personally, it’s usually still to do with things like leadership and looking after the group. I’d just like to see a tiny moment, a glimpse that these two can relax a little around one another and talk like two guys to one another.
Daryl will never be a replacement for Shane to Rick as they’d been friends so long, but I do miss that bond they had (before Shane wanted to kill Rick all the time). I miss that the show doesn’t really have a bromance between the two character, despite them calling it that. Andy and Norman have a bromance. Rick and Daryl’s relationship is almost like a boss and an employee. Daryl wants to be told what to do by Rick, wants to be lead and he’s more than willing to let Rick do that.
What’ll be interesting for me is that with what’s happened with Carol will Daryl break away from putting himself under Rick? I want Daryl and Rick to have a more balanced friendship and it’s because of how Daryl see’s himself that it’s how it is. I still think he see’s himself as a lesser man than Rick. In the aftermath of Carol being sent away, I’d like Daryl to realise that he has to rely on his own judgement and not just follow Rick, that his gut instinct can lead him well. I want them to develop a better friendship and for it to be equal, for Rick to truly trust other people enough for him to take a situation like what happened with Carol and to listen to them, to let them help guide him so he doesn’t feel burdened by his choices. I think they could give these two a much better friendship if they did this.
